The 14th Annual Lantern Festival is Next SATURDAY

The 14th Annual Lantern Festival will take place at the AEA Elementary School on Saturday, November 7th, 2015 from 4-7 pm.

A bratwurst dinner will be available for purchase as well as a bake sale. The 2nd graders will be putting on a performance in the MPR followed by a Beer Stein Competition. The event will end with a Lantern Parade around the neighborhood.

Students in grades K-4 will be crafting Lanterns with their German teachers. If you have a younger or older child that is interested in making a Lantern to carry for the walk, please visit this Lantern Crafting website for ideas and templates. Sticks and lights for the Lanterns will be available for purchase at the event.

The Lantern Festival is organized by Friends of AEA and volunteers like you! In order for the event to be successful, each year we need lots of volunteers. Please go to SignUpGenius to see the list of available opportunities and sign-up. If you prefer not to sign-up online, or would like more information about volunteering, feel free to email our event organizers, Jennifer Cardinale and Angie Santini directly at lantern2015@foaea.org.

For more information on the St. Martin’s Day Tradition and Laternenumzug, please check this out Martinstag (St. Martin's Day).

Candy Buy-Back at Lantern Festival

From 4-6pm at the Lantern Festival, Fine Dentistry will pay your kids $1 for every pound of unopened hard candy (up to 5 pounds), then send the candy to our troops overseas. (See flyer for complete details.)

Look for 4th Grader, Maya, at the Lantern Festival

Maya is in fourth grade in Ms. Johnson's class. She has put together a website Maya's Pillow Project to collect socks and pillows for the homeless. Maya will have a table at the Lantern Festival next to the coat and blanket donation box for you to also donate socks and pillows to homeless shelters. So far we have given out 376 pillows, 236 pairs of socks, 100 blankets and lots of pillow cases.

Maya will sock and blankets for sponsorship, a board game about homelessness, "Spent", a game on the computer to teach about homelessness and more. You can also write a personal note to give to a homeless man or woman along with the socks or blankets.

Middle School - 6th Grade Dia de los Muertos Celebration - Nov 5 and 6

Ms. Milian's Dia de los Muertos celebration for ALL 6th graders is next week, Nov. 5 and 6 at 9:45am. The celebration will include Pan de Muertos, hot chocolate, crafting papel picado (Look this up. It is really cool!) and decorating traditional sugar skulls.

100+ students will attend the celebration each day. To pull this off, Ms. Milian needs our help! She still needs:

  • (10) 2 lbs bags of POWDERED / CONFECTIONERS sugar for icing on the sugar skulls. Ms. Milian needs these by MONDAY NOV 2 BEFORE the party.
  • (20) Loaves of Pan de Muertos bread (at local Mexican bakeries).
  • (20) Half gallons of chocolate milk. If you can bring prepared hot chocolate to the party in a coffee carafe, that is even better!
  • (120) Paper cups in Dia de los Muertos theme or bright colors such as red, purple, black
  • (200 sheets) Tissue paper in bright colors example here
  • Dia de los Muertos decorations examples here

Although no parent volunteers are needed for this celebration, parents are welcome to attend.

To donate items, please go to the MS Teacher Wish List on Sign Up Genius here. This way everyone can determine what items are still needed. Please bring all non-perishable items to Ms. Milian by Monday Nov. 2nd. Please bring bread on Wed 4th, Thurs. 5th or Friday 6th. Signing up on SignUpGenius.com is a snap. But if you prefer not to sign-up online, simply bring your donations to Ms. Milian.

Thank you for making this an authentic Dia de los Muertos celebration! Questions? Contact Ms. Milian or Amy.

German Exchange Student Visit 2015

Join us in welcoming 40 students from Herderschule, Gießen, Germany this Friday who will visit AEA middle school families until November 18th. The German student exchange is a longstanding tradition at AEA and allows many middle school students to have a first-hand immersion experience. To find out more about our German exchange program please visit this link.

We will start planning the 2016/2017 Exchange in Feb/March 2016, please check for meeting announcement at that time.

Purchasing on Amazon: The Networking Effect

Thank you for continuing to use our link to Amazon.com. The success of this program is growing and it is all thanks to you. October was our best non-holiday month ever with over $930 raised! Keep up the good work and remember to use our link for all of your Amazon purchases.

Don't forget that anybody can use foaea.org/amazon and help support AEA. Tell grandparents, uncles, and aunts know. Let your friends know. Tell anybody walking down the street, sitting next to you at a restaurant, or your officemate at work. Change the bookmarks on any computer you can find. Use it at work. If somebody asks you to help fix there computer, tell them that changing their Amazon bookmark to foaea.org/amazon is the support fee. There's really no limit to how much we can raise with this program. All we need is to do is keep getting the word (or link) out and don't forget to change your own bookmarks on all of your computers and smart devices.

Support essential enrichment programs at AEA

Please help support essential programs at AEA through a donation to Friends of Albert Einstein Academies. Our goal is to have 200 families participate in this donation drive. Donating to FoAEA supports the enrichment programs that our kids benefit from including art, music, PE and science programs and provides funds for field trips, assemblies, and classroom supplies.

If you haven't signed up yet, please take 5 minutes to contribute to AEA's enrichment programs. Go to our donation website from your mobile device or computer and select a monthly donation amount or a one time donation. Choose $30/month ($1/day) or any amount affordable to you. Even $5 or $10 per month makes a huge difference for the kids.

Matching Grants

Last year, the following companies made matching grants to FoAEA: Union Bank, Qualcomm, Pfizer, Intuit, Genentech, Covidien, Nokia, and ARS National Svcs.

We thank all of these companies for their generous support. If you work for any of these companies and have not yet taken advantage of their matching grant program, it just takes a few minutes and is free money to the school. One way of finding out if your employeer supports matching grants is to look at this list of companies. Information normally needed to have an employeer make a matching grant is available here.
